Leon S. August, a devoted husband and renowned nuclear physicist, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, he graduated from Aloysius High School. After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Louisiana State University and then a Master of Science in Physics from Tulane University. Leon was awarded his PhD in Physics from Louisiana State University. Moving to Alexandria, Virginia, he spent his career working at the United States Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. His research explored beta and gammaray spectroscopy, basic nuclear physics scattering experiments, microdosimetry, and the study of radiation effects on MOS devices. Leon was a member of the American Physical Society, IEEE, AAAS, and RESA. In 2003, Leon and his wife Lorraine returned home to the New OrleansBaton Rouge area. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony S. and Helen B. August, and, earlier this year, after sixty years of marriage, his wife, Lorraine Donnelly August. He is survived, and deeply missed, by his nieces, nephews, and especially his cousin, Linda Barbalich. Father John Sims will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at noon on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana.
