Landry L.A. Roy, 76, died Saturday, August 9, 2014 in his home after a struggle with cancer. Mr. Roy is known by thousands of students as an extraordinary teacher. With his sharp wit, sense of humor and passion for knowledge, Mr. Roy influenced the lives of every student he encountered. If the measure of a life is in the impact one has on others, then Mr. Roy was indeed a great man. Through his teaching of English, History, Civics, his coaching of girls and boys basketball and adult education, L.A. Roy opened the minds and hearts of everyone who was fortunate enough to call him teacher. No one brought Dickens and Shakespeare to life like he did. For Mr. Roy, teaching was more than a job, it was a calling through which he served others for over 40 years.
Mr. Roy earned a masters degree from LSU and had a long career as a teacher at Mansura High School. After retirement he was a substitute teacher at St. Michaels Catholic School, Parkview Baptist School and The Brighton School in Baton Rouge. He was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church in Mansura and St. Patricks Catholic Church in Baton Rouge.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wilma R. Roy children, Didi R. Rozas and husband Tommy, and Sheri R. Williams and husband Guy grandchildren, Kristen and Courtney Rozas, Camille Roy, and Dylan Williams stepgrandchildren, Jessie and Shane Williams, and daughterinlaw, Kim Hinojosa of San Antonio, TX. L.A. was preceded in death by his son, Don M. Roy parents, Loys and Bessie Juneau Roy and sisters, Elsie Roy Lemoine and Betty Roy Saucier.
