Julian Darden

Julian Allen Darden, 84, a resident of Baton Rouge, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. A memorial service will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m., with visitation from 9 a.m. until service time. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Ken Carroll and the Rev. Fred Wideman. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Westmoreland Darden; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Allen Darden, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Allen Dale and Maria Marrero Darden, of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren, Joseph Allen Darden, of Los Angeles, Kristen Ruth Darden, of Tulsa, Okla., Rachel Lynn Darden, of New York City, Alexander Marrero Darden, Julian Alberto Darden and Allen Dale Mookie Darden Jr., all of Baton Rouge; and a brother, E. Turner Darden, of Wilmington, Del. Honorary pallbearers are his four grandsons and Charles Schoonmaker, Eric Schoonmaker, John Cook, Louis Freeman, Stan Reynolds and Hugo Marrero Sr. Preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Allen Darden and Arline Gladys Turner Darden, who were of Norfolk, Va.; and by a beloved daughter-in-law, Susan Sills Darden, who was of Grand Junction, Colo. He had been a resident of Baton Rouge since February 1948 and was a native of Norfolk, Va. He graduated in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and came here to work for Exxon, retiring from the Exxon Baton Rouge Chemical Plant in 1983 with 35 years of service. A veteran of three years in the military during World War II, he served in Europe with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and, since 1956, Broadmoor United Methodist Church. During its early years he was active in its development, having been a financial drive chairman, building committee member, trustee, adult Sunday school superintendent, secretary of the official board and chairman of the board. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class for 53 years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70815.
