Julia Lanelle Smith Helouin, a resident of Baton Rouge passed away at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at The Carpenter House.
She was born March 2, 1917 in Tylertown, MS, daughter of the late Daniel Murray Smith and Mary Myrtis Pope. While attending LSU, she met her husband, the late Andrew James Helouin, Jr. They made their home in Baton Rouge, where they worked together in service to the March of Dimes. She became the executive director of the local Baton Rouge Chapter, retiring in 1983 after providing many hours of service to polio victims and directing various pledge campaigns and fundraisers, such as the annual Halloween Haunted House and the April Walk-a-Thon. Nell was a talented seamstress and a wonderful cook. She also loved to work in her yard and had a special fondness for growing roses and poppies. She was a long-standing member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and traveled extensively with the church LLL group. She also participated in the Broadmoor Methodist Church ABC group. Her travels with church and family took her to China, Hawaii, England, Africa, Colonial Williamsburg and the Biltmore Estate.
She is survived by two sons and daughters in law, Andrew James Helouin, III and Gladys Bland Helouin, Randolph Gerald Helouin and Shelley Arnold Helouin. Also survived by four grandchildren, Tracy Helouin Hayes and husband Greg, James Michael Helouin, Keri Helouin Tweed and husband Gregg, and Daniel Blake Helouin. Three great-grandchildren, Evan Bradley, Sydney Elise, and Brady Jackson Tweed.
She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters, D. M. Smith, Jr., Genevieve Smith Herrington, Lalla Smith Smith, Bernice Smith Bateman, and Yvette Smith Hext.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Dr. Terry Ellis.
The family would like to thank Whealdon Estates and The Carpenter House for their special care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge and The Carpenter House.
