Jon Mcarthur

December 30, 1961 — April 9, 2011

Fear not, for I have redeemed you I have called you by your name you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. Isaiah 43:12. As the sun rose on Saturday, April 9, 2011, surrounded by his family, Jon said Hey hey and with one breath, cancer fell away and his new life with Jesus began. We saw evidence of his joy in the smile on his face. A celebration service of Jons life will be held at The Chapel on the Campus, 3355 Dalrymple Drive, on Saturday, April 16, at 11:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Jon was born in Baton Rouge on Dec. 30, 1961, to Brent and Gerry McArthur. He was sixth in a family of eight children. He graduated from Sacred Heart and Catholic High, where he made many lifelong friends who lovingly surrounded him in his last days. While attending LSU, he worked in the restaurant industry, where he met another group of friends who never fell away. It wasnt until years later that he realized his latent talent as the Master of Plaster. His creations adorn many homes and establishments in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. Jon met and married Karen Spano, the love of his life or, according to him, always the most beautiful one in the room. They loved to make people laugh, and together they topped all comedy duos, eclipsing Burns and Allen and overshadowing Lucy and Desi. In 1994, their son, Chandler Brent, was born. Finally, Jon had a sidekick for his Friday night forays to Barnes and Noble, enjoying a good book and a cup of cappuccino together. Their daughter, Grace Golden, inherited Jons entertainment gene and his tender heart, which she used to soothe him on tough days. Third child Malloy Tomeny, whom Jon wanted to name Tiger Lily against Karens objections, completed their family. She took the family entertainment talents to a whole new level. This family enjoyed many wonderful hours together on the water in their boat including others in the fun was one of their greatest joys and Jons strongest weapon in his quest for the title favorite uncle. Facebook was the epicenter for a collision of Jons humor and friendship skills. He had found the vehicle for his voice, it was a gift to all and we are still laughing. Being friended by Jon was a privilege and a treat he was a true friend. As a son and a brother, he was always available when needed, dropping whatever he was doing to help he was a selfless man. He took great delight in his family, each one caused his eyes to sparkle he was a dedicated husband and father. Jon was a glass halffull kind of guy who approached both life and cancer with that perspective. Bravery, grace and dignity described his walk through this illness. He continued to choose humor, wit and teasing, thus comforting us until the very end he was true, selfless and dedicated. He will be missed deeply, remembered vividly and loved eternally. We are so very grateful to have had him with us. In addition to his wife, children and mother, he is survived by his brothers, sisters and their spouses: Brenda and Tommy Teepell, Marcia and Art Ruckman, Holley and Ronnie Doran, and Brent, Gerry, Michael and Ryan McArthur and also by his wifes family, Roland and Brenda Spano, Darline and Ken Lee and her brothers, sister, and spouses: Roland Spano, Rhett and Lindsay Spano, and Ashley and Jason McClanahan. Many nieces and nephews were loved through his teasing, pranks and generous spirit. Jon died exactly a year after his fathers burial. We dont always understand Gods timing, but we choose to put our trust in Him. His family would like to recognize the wonderful care Jon received from Dr. Chris McCanless, Dr. Ryan Majoria, nurses Patti and Christie, of Amedysis Home Health, and nurses David and Don, of the Carpenter House of St. Josephs Hospice. We were nourished by the love, help and many meals provided by dear family, neighbors and friends, especially those at St. Lukes Episcopal and Parkview Baptist schools. We especially want to acknowledge our dear friend, Suna Morgan, who cheerfully and lovingly served wherever there was a need. Jons life richly blessed us. In lieu of flowers, please bless someone in your life. God has led and sustained us every step of this journey, we gratefully praise Him. Weeping may endure for a night, but JOY comes in the morning. Psalms 30:5.
