John Henry Sample, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Oct 30, 2018 just short of his 79th birthday from esophageal cancer. John was born in Joliet, IL, on Nov 1, 1939, where he graduated from Lockport Township High School. He graduated from LSU in Business Administration in 1962. He served for a brief period in the US Air Force. John was formerly married to Suzanne Sabin Terrell, who still resides in Baton Rouge. He worked with Arnold Palmer selling golf equipment, then for Titleist in his early career. He operated his own mortgage business, National Mortgage Network, where he spent the majority of his working years. He was a superb golfer winning many tournaments in Illinois before moving south to play golf for LSU. John shattered the City Park course record in 1958 firing a 10 under par score of 60 and won many club championships at Sherwood Forest CC. An avid duck hunter and fisherman, John fell in love with Louisiana. He loved spending time with his sons, grandsons, and friends at their camp near Galiano. He is preceded in death by his parents Archie Sample and Dorothy Anderson Sample Younger. John is survived by his sister Dorlene (Cookie) Djerf, two sons Greg and David Sample and four grandchildren, Lindsey, Hayden, Christian and Jon- Mikael Dexter Sample. The graveside memorial service and burial will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, at 10:30AM on Fri Nov 23rd.
