John Powers

A resident of Baton Rouge, John died Friday October 23, 2009 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital surrounded by family and friends after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 63. John is survived by his wife Genie Powers ; son Worth Heaton Powers and wife Kristin; stepdaughter Victoria Eskola and husband Thomas; mother Elgerie Woods Prater of Rockmart, Georgia; grandson Griffin Daniel Powers; step grandsons Gage Taylor Mendow and Thomas Eskola 2; sister and brother- in-law Sherrie and Hal Brown of Rockmart, Georgia; sister-in-law and husband Suzy and Steve Sharp; nieces Tiffany Hammonds, Lindsay Perniciaro and Mallory Sharp, uncles, aunts, cousins, great nephews, and many many friends across the country. John was preceded in death by his father, John Worth Buck Powers, his maternal grandparents Jervis and Jewell Woods, and paternal grandparents John Daniel Michael and Gertrude Bell Powers. Born in Rome, Georgia and raised in Rockmart, Georgia, John was a 1964 graduate of Rockmart High School where he played football and basketball. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Georgia. Upon graduation he taught history in middle school, worked as a Probation and Parole Officer for the State of Georgia, a Review Officer for the Georgia Parole Board, and then began his career as a United States Probation and Pre-Trial Officer in Atlanta. He relocated to the Middle District of Louisiana ProbationPre-Trial Office in 1982, and retired from federal service in 2003. Upon retirement John did volunteer work as a patient care assistant at Our Lady of the Lake hospital Five West Oncology Unit and eventually became employed at OLOL until he became too ill to work. John was an avid UGA Bulldog fan, but he rooted for the Tigers when he became part of a fanatic LSU family. Born and raised in Georgia, he came to enjoy the traditions and culture of south Louisiana. He loved the outdoors, and ran several marathons during his running days. He coached and played soccer for several BRSA Soccer teams and was a member of the Villa mens team for over 20 years. He also enjoyed dancing in the Krewe of Romany couples dance and loved to tailgate at football games. John was fun loving, kind, caring and compassionate, he loved his family and friends very much and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be Wednesday October 28 at Resthaven Funeral Home 11817 Jefferson Highway from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Johns memory can be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, TN or the University of Georgia Alumni Association.
