John Nome

March 15, 1930 — December 24, 2014

John F. Di Nome, 84, died at his home in Baton Rouge, La., on December 24, 2014, following a long illness due to cancer. He leaves a wife of 60 years, Lucy a brother, Angelo three children, John, Marie, and Thomas grandchildren Caroline, Nicholas, Joseph, Evan and Nathan and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a sister, Marion.

John was born and raised in New York City, and during his life he was active in many philanthropic and charitable activities throughout the city. He attended New Yorks Catholic schools, graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School in The Bronx in 1947. John had a lifelong association with the school, holding a position on its alumni board and establishing scholarship programs that provided financial assistance for Hayes students college educations. For his efforts and contributions, he was inducted into the Cardinal Hayes Hall of Fame society.

John joined the U.S. Army in 1952 during the Korean War, serving as a Signal Corps radio operator in Korea and in Japan with the United States Occupation Forces. In 1954, he returned to New York and worked as a printer and linotype operator.

He met Lucy Masi and the two were married in 1955. They lived in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, N.Y., and were active members of the St. Helena Church parish. John joined, and later directed, the Churchs Glee Club, a role he would continue in for several decades. In addition to performing at weekly Mass and other church functions, each year the Glee Club traveled across New York City, entertaining the elderly, children and patients at hospitals, nursing homes and community centers.

In 1962, John and his family moved to Yonkers, N.Y. He started working for the Allstate Insurance Company. John operated his own Allstate office and during his long career he was recognized several times for outstanding sales performance, ultimately being inducted into Allstates Ring of Honor. He was also a mentor to younger Allstate agents, helping them develop successful careers.

John and his family lived in Yonkers for more than 40 years, continuing their churchrelated community involvement as members of their local parish, St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers, N.Y.

In 2005, John and Lucy moved to Baton Rouge, La. While living there, he continued receiving regular treatment at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. John and Lucy are grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at both facilities for their exceptional care and support.

Donations may be made to Cardinal Hayes High School, The John F. Di Nome 47 Memorial Fund, 650 Grand Concourse, Bronx, N.Y. 10451. The family is also planning a memorial service at Gate of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.

Visitation hours will be observed Tuesday, December 30, 9:00 am until 10:00 am, immediately followed by a funeral Mass, both held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., Baton Rouge, La., 70806.
