John Welton Lynn, PhD., died on Monday, February 5, 2024, at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, following a long battle with parathyroid and esophageal cancer. He was 73.
He was born to John and Margaret Lynn in Wichita Falls, Texas, on December 16, 1950. As a teenager, he met his lifelong love, Barbara Loggie, and they spent the next 60 years sharing wonderful adventures. John received his B.S. from the University of Houston, his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of California at Davis, and his Post Doctorate at the University of Miami. He joined the faculty of LSU in 1983. During his years there, he worked tirelessly with students and faculty. One of his passions was working with pre-med students as the sponsor for Alpha Epsilon Delta. Many of his students actually became his own medical doctors. He was not only the LSU sponsor, but also a Past President of the National AED Society.
In addition to numerous publications and many awards, he earned two U.S. patents for his research with shrimp and zebra mussels. In 2012, John was promoted to Associate Dean of the College of Science. Besides his love of teaching, John also enjoyed traveling, woodworking, hunting and fishing with friends, cooking, and restoring a 1957 Chevy.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lesli Lynn Richerson; parents-in-law, Bob and Bobbie Loggie; and sister-in-law, Lora Loggie.
He is survived by the family he adored, his wife of 52 years, Barbara Loggie Lynn; daughters, Erica (Dale) Broussard and Gretta (Matt) Blankenship; grandchildren, Henry Broussard, Bree Blankenship, and Hudson Blankenship; brother-in-law, Robin Loggie; and nieces, Kylie Evans and Sarah Richerson.
