John Martin Hary passed away Friday, September 16, 2016 at the age of 83 after lengthy illness. He was a US Army Veteran, a native of Minnesota, and a resident of St. Gabriel, LA. John was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, and the Silver Star while on duty in the Korean War. After retirement from the work force in 1996, he was appointed Pastor of Grace Fellowship Church on GSRI Ave. Baton Rouge, and 11 years later, he retired due to ill health.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Shelvia Harrell Hary; 2 daughters, Sherri Hary Lewiston and spouse, Mark Lewiston of Natchitoches, LA., Shannon Hary Bodin and spouse Paul Bodin of Jarreau, LA.; 3 sons, Carl Hary of Hammond, LA, Michael Hary and spouse, Denise Pierce Hary of Elkhart, IN., John Moreau of Angola, LA.; 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. His extended family includes 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Bertha Lambert Hary; 3 brothers, Ernest Hary, Eugene Hary and James Hary; 4 sisters, Ernestine Larson, Catherine Johnston, Marion Iddings, and Florence Airhart.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, on October 1, from 12 noon to 1pm, followed immediately by a memorial service in his honor.
