John Fournier, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his immediate family, on Sunday, April 5, 2026, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after a strong battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
John was born on August 1, 1951, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and he carried the spirit of the city with him wherever he went. He served as a lumber salesman, contractor, and builder, spending the last 26 years of his career at Dufrene Building Materials, where he led sales.
His hands were almost always in the dirt, tending to his gardens. If you couldn’t find him in the garden, he was watching tennis or listening to smooth jazz. He loved traveling to the beach, where he and his family enjoyed long conversations and dancing.
John was, above all else, a devoted and loving father, husband, and grandfather. For over 46 years, he was married to his wife, Jana. Together, they built a family that truly embodies love, support, and connection.
John adored his grandchildren. Whether carrying them on his shoulders or simply spending time with them, he filled their lives with love and laughter. Time with family and friends was his pastime. He nurtured relationships, made time for conversations, and took pride in watching his family and others grow.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Bernice Mechana and John Fournier, Sr.; his beautiful daughter, Alicia Fournier; and his brother, Steven Fournier.
He is survived by his wife, Jana Belaire Fournier; his children, Jill Fournier Durrett, John Fournier, and his partner, Jacob Broadus; his grandchildren, Emma Durrett, Elliott Durrett, and Chad Fournier; his great-grandchildren, Tate Fournier and Titan Fournier; and many loving nieces and nephews, with special recognition given to his beloved niece, Candace Johnson, who was his personal oncology nurse.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Acacia Church, 10051 Siegen Lane, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with the memorial service beginning at 2:00 PM.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Alsfeld and the care team at MD Anderson New Orleans, the nurses and staff at Ochsner Oncology of Baton Rouge, and Acacia Church of Baton Rouge. The family would also like to recognize the love, support, and kindness received by many families with special recognition to the Beyt Family, the Broadus Family, the Empson Family, and Paul Dufrene for their extraordinary support during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family is strongly requesting donations made in John’s honor to Blood Cancer United.
