John Donald Colona, age 88, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 23,2016 after a brief illness of lung cancer. He was born on March 9, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a native of Hammond, Louisiana and a resident of Baton Rouge for the past 42 years.
He retired from the State of Louisiana in 1988 from his position as Assistant Director of the Division of Administration.
He served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1951-1954 and was a proud Veteran. He loved his country and loved Patriotic music.
One of his proudest accomplishments was being a founding member of the Platinum Sound Orchestra of Baton Rouge in which he played the trumpet. He loved music from the Big Bands era, which is what the Platinum Sound Orchestra still primarily plays today.
He enjoyed playing and watching golf, watching college football games on Saturdays, working jumble and crossword puzzles, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and taking family vacations.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Genevieve (Genny) Colona, son David Colona and his wife, Mary Colona, daughter Debbie Colona, daughter Patty Colona Cook and her husband Trey, two grandsons, Ryan Colona and Preston Colona, two granddaughters, Katy Cook and Jenny Cook, and one great granddaughter, Calla Colona.
He was preceded in death by his father, Emile Colona, his mother, Catherine Colona and his brother Nat Colona.
Visitation will be at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home at 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 and from 9:00 am on Thursday, October 27, 2016 with the funeral services following at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
