A retired employee of the Louisiana Department of Employment Security, John died Monday morning, Feb. 28, 2011, at 1 a.m. at his sons home in Denham Springs. He was 87, born in Lake Village, Ark., and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Hulbert and the USS Manila Bay CVE61 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He won the World Championship of Dominoes in 1984 and was wellknown in the Baton Rouge area for his prowess in this arena. Known for his sense of humor, he could always brighten everyones day with his dry wit. Papaw loved his family, playing dominoes and LSU football. Visiting on Wednesday, March 2, at Resthaven Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by a grandson, John B. Corbin III. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his daughter, Melanie Manuel and husband Don sons, John B. Corban Jr. and wife Becky, and Hugh Corban and wife Gina 12 grandchildren, John B. Corban III, Shane Corban, Clint Corban, Brandt Corban, Matt Corban, Landon Corban, Garrett Corban, Brett Manuel, Kacie Manuel, Kellie Manuel, Jamie Manuel and Jodie Manuel and greatgrandchildren, Caylee Corban, John B. Corban IV, Connor Corban, Kelsey Corban, Kady Corban, Carter Corban, Jacob Corban, Kylie Corban and Madison Corban. Preceded in death by the wife he cherished, Dorothy Pauline Corban and parents, Lucian and Lela Corban. Pallbearers will be John Corban III, Shane Corban, Brandt Corban, Matt Corban, Landon Corban, Garrett Corban, Brett Corban and Clint Corban.
