A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Newellton, he died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Ochsner Medical Center at age 74. He was very dedicated to his job of 42 years. He retired as a security supervisor for the Louisiana School for the Deaf. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Sunday, July 27, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visiting resumes at the funeral home chapel on Monday, July 28, from 10 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Arnold Austin. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cooper Byrd; two daughters, Debbie Cormier and husband Brent and Angela Kaplan and husband Mitch; a son, John Preston Byrd and wife Yolanda; a sister, Geneva Barfield and husband Billy; a brother, Doyle Byrd and wife Peggy; nine grandchildren, Natasha, Marshall, Erik, Garrett, Cooper, Robert, Alexis, David and Marguerite; and two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Oriana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Preston and Dixie Mae Crowley Byrd. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Deaf Church.
