Joann Balencie

JoAnn Thomas Balencie, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA., passed away peacefully on August 28, 2017.

JoAnn was born in New Orleans, LA on March 25, 1937. She graduated from F. T. Nicholls High School in 1954 and was married to Calvin F. Balencie on February 11, 1956. JoAnn worked as a medical secretary at Charity Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans. She also worked for 24 years as the secretary for Woodland Presbyterian Church where she not only served the congregation, but made many friends among them. JoAnn and Calvin moved to Terrytown in 1964 and lived there before relocating to Baton Rouge in 2006. As a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, she served as a PTO member and officer, and was a Girl Scout leader for several years. She served as a lector both at Christ the King and at her new parish in Baton Rouge, Most Blessed Sacrament.

JoAnn is survived by her husband of 61 years, Calvin, and her daughters, Jeanne B. Hildebrandt (David), Angele B. Ourso (Darrell), her sister, Joan T. Carona, and her grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda) and Ryan Hildebrandt, and Amanda and Daniel Ourso. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Irwin and Edna Thomas, her brother, Irwin "Buddy" Thomas, Jr. and her brother-in-law, Jack Carona.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 1, 2017, from 9:30 to 11:30am at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 15615 Jefferson Hwy. Baton Rouge, LA, Mass will follow at 11:30am. Inurnment will take place at Resthaven Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, later in the afternoon at 3:00 pm.
