Jimmy Fontenot was one of a kind, but with many names: Jimmy, Beau, Beau Jimmy, Beau James, The Mamou Flash and the French Sculpter (aka the chiseling coonass).
He was 72, and passed away on April 5, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family and friends.Born and raised in "Big" Mamou, LA, Jimmy came to Baton Rouge in 1965 as a fill in barber at the State Capitol. From there, he moved to the Baton Rouge Barber Shop and then The Ritz in downtown. In 1974, he opened his own barber shop, Beau James on Corporate Boulevard, where he not only attracted hundreds of customers, but gained a lifetime of friends. Jimmy was a superb barber, an oldies aficianado, and an encyclopidia of every joke ever told. He was also the best husband, dad, brother, father in law and Paw Paw anyone could ask for. He was a special man. There will never be another one like him.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judy Granger Fontenot, who was the love of his life; his beautiful daughter, Karla Smith her husband Rob; his son, Christian Fontenot, an apple that didn't fall far from the tree, and his wife Stacey Gascon Fontenot; his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Kelsey and Andrew Smith and Blake Fontenot; and his partner in crime his sister, Kathleen Fontenot, and her partner Peggy Gannon; and his sister, Nannette Bounds and her husband Paul.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Zennis Fontenot and Mary Grace McGee.
