James Rawlins Sr. passed away at his home in Baton Rouge on Friday, July 28, 2023. He was born on August 11, 1934, in Central, Louisiana. Jim attended Louisiana State University and University of Houston in pursuit of a career in dentistry, but ultimately found his true passion as an entrepreneur. He enjoyed more than 50 years as a successful real estate developer, building contractor and electrical contractor, founding Modern Electric Company and Pelican Homes, Inc. He was at the forefront of residential and commercial development as well as electrical contracting work in East Baton Rouge Parish and Ascension Parish. He maintained a deep commitment to both communities throughout his life. In the early 1980s, Jim joined others in founding Ascension Christian Academy. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and a committed deacon, leader and member of Parkview Baptist Church for more than four decades. Above all, Jim was a devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend, supporter and advisor to so many people whose lives he touched. Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly and children: Kimberly Rawlins (Chris Shea) and Jimmy Rawlins (Krista); grandchildren Olivia Buras (Derek), Victoria Capello (Trey), Dillon Roy, J.D. Roy and Kaitlyn Roy; and great grandchild Margaret Rose Buras. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Sarah Rawlins, sister Beatrice Adams, brother J.B. Rawlins, brother Francis Rawlins, sister Mary Chauff, and son Kevin D. Rawlins. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm with a service and burial to follow. Pallbearers will be: Lon Mouhot, Doug Hillensbeck, David Jareau, Craig LaFargue, Jeff Lejeune and Chris Shea. Honorary pallbearers are: Lindsey Laird, Glenn Dupree, Paul Brasseaux and Dr. Robert Peden. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jay Davis, Rose Williams, Angela Johnson and Daneisha Harmason as well as Audubon Hospice for their love and care during Jim’s final days.
