Jessie Ruth Collins, also known as "Jan", 89, of Prairieville, LA, passed away January 25, 2017. Born and raised in Gladewater, Texas, Jessie was one of 10 children who worked on the family farm. She was the daughter of John Read and Floy Haptonstall Read. She lived and worked in Baton Rouge and was owner of women's clothing shops in the 1970's. In 1981, after marrying John Collins, Jessie moved to Prairieville, where they owned and operated a family mini storage business for many years.
Jessie was an amazing cook (The Best Gumbo!), talented still life artist and accomplished quilt maker. She enjoyed making Christmas arts and crafts and playing the harmonica. As a senior, she loved watching LSU football games and seeing family.
Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Troy E. Smith and Larry E. Smith, six brothers, three sisters, and her dear friend and companion, Ed. She is survived by daughter, Donna Beaver and husband Terry, and son, Kevin L. Rogers. "Granny" will be missed by her 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Most of all, we will miss her beautiful smile. A special thank you to Francis Burns for her many years of friendship.
Memorial services will be held Friday February 10th at The Church, 13423 Hwy 431 in St. Amant. Visiting will be from 9:30-11:00 with the service from 11:00-12:00 conducted by Pastor Chuck Robb.
