Jean “John” Philip Dugas, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on November 29, 2018, at the age of 80. John had a long fight with Parkinson’s for 28 years. He was diagnosed at 52 years old and spent 8 years in the Louisiana Veterans Home.
John was born on June 6, 1938 in Brusly, St. Martin. He grew up with a love for music and dancing, even playing the trombone in a local band in high school. He graduated from Donaldsonville High School in 1956. Following high school, John joined the Air Force in May 1956 and served 1 ½ years in Formosa and 1 ½ years in Germany, with honorary discharge in May 1962. He went on to attend New Orleans Barber College and graduated in 1967 and was a local barber for more than 30 years. He married Carolyn Samaha on December 21, 1963. John had a tremendous love for family, vacations to the beach, camping, and he admired old cars and refurbished several as a hobby. He was a member of the Barbers Union and a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church for more than 40 years.
John is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Samaha Dugas; his daughters, Tommie Jean Edwards and husband Jeff, and Myra Broussard and husband Burke; his brother, Edwin Dugas; his sisters, Mae Dugas, Marie Landry, and Edith Webre; his grandchildren, Daniel Braud, Blakeley Santos, Brooke Broussard, Matthew Edwards, Michael Edwards, Brandt Broussard, and Brittany Broussard; and his great-grandchildren, John Paul Braud, Andrew Braud, and Ava Santos.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Philip Dugas and Marie Mabile Dugas; his brothers, Pierre Dugas and Edward George Dugas.
Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA, on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 5:00 pm till 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11441 Goodwood Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA, on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 10:00 am until a funeral mass at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Pallbearers will be Burke Broussard, Jeff Edwards, Daniel Braud, Matthew Edwards, Michael Edwards, and Brandt Broussard.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Edwin Dugas, Michael Dugas, Roy Giroir, and Tony Mayo.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in John’s name.
