James "Wally" Wallace Iles, Sr., a lifelong resident of Louisiana, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2023, at the age of 86 after battling cancer.
Wally was born on September 20, 1936, to John Calvin and Myrtle Iles in Alexandria, Louisiana. After graduating from Bolton High School, he joined the United States Army, where he served during the Korean War. His experience working in communications for the Army led to a lifelong career as a computer engineer. Wally was one of the first pioneers in the new computer industry, employed for over 30 years at Unisys (formerly Sperry/Univac). He worked on some of the earliest computer systems and was widely regarded as an expert in his field.
In 1957, Wally met Diane Murdzak in Alexandria, Louisiana. Wally married Diane on January 7, 1961, and they went on to have three children: Dorothy (Iles) Moss, James "Jimmy" Wallace Iles, Jr., and Richard "Ricky" Calvin Iles.
Before retiring, Wally and Diane acquired Ultra Computer Systems, Inc. and worked together building a PC sales and services company. In his free time, Wally was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrtle Iles, his brothers John Thomas "J.T." Iles and Marvin Iles, and his wife, Diane Murdzak Iles.
He is survived by his children, Dorothy Iles Moss, Jimmy Iles, and Ricky Iles; grandchildren Brittany Gehring, Alexandra Levine, Justin Iles, Luke Iles, and Emily Iles; and great-granddaughters Sophia, London, and Isabel Gehring.
