Jim passed away suddenly after a brief illness at his home in Baton Rouge, just shy of his 64th birthday. He proudly served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and was the weapons officer on the USS Nathan Hale submarine. He was an assistant professor of mathematics at Our Lady of the Lake College. He is survived by his wife, Marlo Anne Cazes Gettys, of Baton Rouge; daughter, Mary Marguerite Gettys Paul and her husband, William P. Paul, of Baton Rouge; son, Stephen R. Messina, of Mandeville; and five grandchildren, Sadie Lynne, Carissa Grace and Shanna Marie Paul, Brandon Thomas Celestin and Stephen R. Messina Jr. He is also survived by his mother, Joyce Hymel Gettys; and five siblings, Wallace Gettys, Thomas Gettys, Robert Gettys, Lynne Plaissance and Joy Gettys. Preceded in death by his father, James O. Gettys; maternal grandparents, Wallace and Thelma Toups Hymel; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Gettys. Graveside service at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 9:30 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Frank Bass and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
