Hugo Alberto Marrero, Sr., age 85, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023. Hugo was born in Güines Cuba on May 2, 1938, to Alberto Marrero and Blanca Zilia (Hera) Marrero. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Oria Quesada Marrero; children Maria Caridad Darden and husband, Allen and Hugo Alberto Marrero, Jr. and wife, Robin; five grandchildren: Alexander and wife Lauren, Julian, Allen “Mookie” Darden, and Christian and Michael Marrero; and two great-grandchildren, Grace and Julian Darden. He is also survived by his sister Blanca Rufina Marrero (Vargas), and brother-in-law Jose “Pepe” Corzo. He was preceded in death by his parents and by brother-in-law Eddy Vargas, and sister-in-law Oilda Corzo.
Hugo left Cuba in 1956, to attend LSU, proudly graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1960. He returned to Cuba to work as an engineer, but soon realized that the communist revolution would force a very difficult choice; he and wife Oria would have to escape from Cuba. In May 1962, he and Oria boldly perfected their escape and began a new life, ultimately settling in Baton Rouge. In subsequent years Hugo was able to orchestrate the bringing of his parents, sister, and sister-in-law along with their families to Baton Rouge. Cuba had come to Baton Rouge in a big way!
In 1968, Hugo started his own engineering firm, Marrero Engineers, which eventually became Marrero Couvillon & Associates, still in business over 50 years later. In 2015, he was recognized by the Louisiana Engineering Society for his distinguished service to the engineering profession.
