Hortense Tassin Fleming Crifasi, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the age of 95.
Hortense was born on November 18, 1919, in the town of Mansura in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, to the late Lena Drouin Tassin and the late Eustis J. Tassin. She grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana, graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School in 1936. Hortense received her R.N. from Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1941 and worked in nursing for 50 years. She is also a graduate of St. Louis University, where she received her B.S. in Health Science.
In 1977, Hortense moved to Baton Rouge after marrying Peter J. Crifasi, to whom she was married for 29 years. She was a loving and caring wife to Peter, who was ill during the last few years of his life. He preceded her death in 2005.
Hortense was active in several organizations in her community. She was a member of: Our Lady of The Lake Hospital Auxiliary; Trianon, the Auxiliary to the Baton Rouge Association for Retarded Citizens, serving as president in 1985; Serendipity Ladies Club; and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She was a past member of the Lake Sherwood Garden Club.
Hortense's first husband, Roy H. Fleming, and the father of her six children, preceded her in death in 1969. She is survived by five of her children, Peggy Fleming, Dr. R. Hugh Fleming (Marty), Robert Fleming (Rebecca), Jane O'Brien, and Paul Fleming. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Sylvia Minor. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Groves (Frank); son-in-law, Paul Minor; ten grandchildren, John Goldwater, David Goldwater, Rob Fleming, Mollie F. Candido, Kathryn Minor, Stephen Minor, Jonathan Fleming, Jason Fleming, Nicole O. Crousillac, and Kaitlyn O'Brien; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, from 10:00 AM until services at 11:00 AM.
Interment will take place at Resthaven Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
