Henry Martin Bohman, 86, of Westminster, California, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on Tuesday, May 25th, 2023. Martin graduated from Bellflower High School and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Master of Arts degree in Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach. Shortly after completing his MBA, Martin served 6 years in the Air Force Reserves as a mechanical engineer, before starting his career in (and following his passion for) science and technology. In 1963 he joined the team at Douglas as an Associate Engineer in the Missile and Space Systems Division, where he helped design the liquid fuel propulsion system on the Saturn S-IVB Project. He then accepted a position as Systems Analyst at IBM, where he worked with dedication for nearly three decades until opting for an early retirement. But his first attempt at a life of leisure did not last long. Always eager to apply his skills in a meaningful way, Martin came out of retirement to start a second career as a professor, teaching cybersecurity to bright, young minds at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Martin loved learning, and was an explorer at heart. He spent many hours of his life pursuing his projects, including earning his sailor’s license, travelling in Europe, and practicing his talents as an accomplished sailor, carpenter, painter, and photographer. However, his strongest passion was always for his family. He was a devoted husband and father to his beloved wife and children. He married his high-school sweetheart, Charmayne Faye Stewart Bohman, in 1958 and was always by her side, happy to support her when she was in the spotlight in her own career as an educator and local politician. He and Charmayne met in high school and made their home in Southern California for over 70 years. They settled in Baton Rouge in 2012, where they have lived for the past 11 years and where they became dynamic members of the congregation at South Baton Rouge Presbyterian Church. Martin treasured the friends and neighbors he discovered in his adopted city, and loved the cultural richness of the region – being especially fond of Cajun and Creole cuisines.
He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Susan Bohman Kalaja (Dorjan Kalaja); his son Martin Stewart Bohman (Laci Bohman); his brother Edward Steadmon; and his two grandchildren, Grace Ann Bohman and James Douglas Bohman.
The memorial services for Martin were postponed until he was reunited with the love of his life, Charmayne Faye Stewart Bohman. He never left her side during his time here on Earth, and it was his wish to be remembered alongside her.
Martin lived a full and charmed life, which he was blessed to share with his wife, family, and many friends. Martin and Charmayne’s fruitful lives, and their commitment to each other, will be celebrated in a joint memorial service on Saturday, July 1st, 2023 at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:00AM and will continue until their memorial service at 11:00AM. A reception to celebrate their lives and love will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home immediately following their service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you show your love for Martin by making a donation to Alzheimer's Research or to The Cousteau Society.
