Helen Brass Nemeth, born on Jan. 1, 1909, in Kingston, N.Y., died at 6:40 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge. She was 100, a resident of Baton Rouge, but she lived the majority of her adult life in East Chicago, Ind. She worked for 50 years at the East Chicago Water Department, where she began as an employee during the Great Depression, and retired in the late 1980s as its chief financial officer. During the Great Depression, Helen supported her entire family, as she was the only one fortunate enough to be employed. After the death of her husband, Frank Nemeth, in the late '80s, Helen moved to Baton Rouge to live with her son and his family in order to enjoy her granddaughter's childhood. In 2000, Helen entered Ollie Steele Burden Manor, where she resided for nine years. On Jan. 1, 2009, Helen was able to return to her Baton Rouge home where friends and family were present to help her celebrate her 100th birthday. Religious service will be at St. Jude Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 18, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. David E. Allen. Entombment in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Schererville, Ind. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Nemeth, who was of East Chicago; two sisters, Betty Black and Mary Brass Kazasick; and two brothers, Julius Brass and John Brass. She is survived by a son, Donald F. Nemeth, Ph.D.; daughter-in-law, Darlyne G. Nemeth, Ph.D.; granddaughter, Madeline Nemeth Simmons; grandson-in-law, David Simmons; nieces and nephews, Joyce Vallis and her husband Gilbert, Eleanor Ustanik and her husband, Andy, Betty Lou Nordeen, John Nemeth, Joe Nemeth Jr., Anna Mae Greenwald; and other relatives, John Nemeth Jr., Richard Gaynor and his wife Sue Jensen, Richard Brass, James Brass, Jennifer Lugar, and Kenneth Nordeen. Mrs. Nemeth can best be remembered by making contributions to the Ollie Steele Burden Manor general fund. As she loved Mardi Gras, this would help the staff with event planning. We wish to acknowledge the kindness of the Ollie Steele Burden Manor staff and especially Ms. Margaret Oxley, who made it possible for Mrs. Nemeth to attend her granddaughter's wedding in November 2005. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ollie Steele Burden Manor general fund, 4250 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809, in Mrs. Helen Nemeth's honor.
