Helen Gallagher

Helen J. Gallagher, daughter of the late William and Cecelia Popowski, died on March 7, 2017.

She was born in Kane, PA., on June 19, 1933, graduated from Kane High school in 1951 and Butler County Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 in Butler, PA. Helen held RN nursing licenses in both PA and LA although she did most of her nursing in PA. She worked at the Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport, PA., and in the operating room at both the Hamot and St. Vincent hospitals in Erie, PA. She enjoyed being a nurse. She retired from Professional Nursing in 1986.
On July 9, 1955, she married Robert F. Gallagher at St. Callistus Church in Kane, PA.

Helen, and her four children, moved to Baton Rouge in 1968 when her husband, a Sales Engineer with Stackpole Carbon Company was transferred to LA. In 1979 they were transferred to Erie, PA., and after Bob retired in 1994, and moved back to Baton Rouge.

Surviving are two daughter, Susan G. Cary and husband Curtis of Baton Rouge, LA., and Joan E. Gallagher of Portland, OR.; her two sons, Robert E. of Madison, AL., and Edward A. and his wife Allene of Baton Rouge, LA. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Cecelia and William Popowski; her one brother, Henry; and her one sister, Charlotte Dalton.

Helen enjoyed traveling, her many trips to New York to see Broadway plays as well as trips to Europe where she visited her relatives in Poland. She also traveled extensively throughout the United States. She enjoyed working on various crafts and quilts which she gave to her family and friends. She also donated a variety of her creations to church Bizaars.

She was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Pelican Patchwork Quilt Club.

Visitation will be held on March 9, 2017, at the St. George Catholic Church, 7808 St. George Dr. Baton Rouge, LA, for two hours before mass. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am. Interment will be in the Mausoleum in St. George Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of the choice of the donor.
