Helen J. Cumbo was welcomed into God's arms and shrouded by heaven's grace on July 21 after bravely fighting cancer and illness for many years. Helen is survived by her loving husband Lawrence Cumbo Sr., and four adult children, Virginia "Ginger" Cumbo Normand and her husband, Neal: Patricia Cumbo Pitchford and her husband, Butch: Lauren Cumbo Talley and her husband, Cullen: and Lawrence Cumbo Jr. and his wife, Julie And Nana's beloved nine grandchildren, Morgan Maulden, Chelsea Maulden, Heather Maulden, Sami Sylvester, Marki Sylvester, Landon Maulden, Gabrielle Cumbo, Annie Cumbo and Riley Reed Talley.
Helen was born on November 15, 1937. She grew up in Port Barre, Louisiana with eight loving brothers and sisters in a two room sharecropper house. Helen picked cotton and worked the farm before she would go to school. Through her strength, intelligence and perseverance, Helen accomplished a successful and lengthy career of public service. She worked her way from a temporary typist position to be named Administrator of the Commercial Division for the Louisiana Secretary of State. Among her many other achievements, Helen was elected President of the International Association of Corporate Administrators (IACA), and received the prestigious Timothy Poulin Distinguished Service Award from IACA in 2012.
Helen had an infectious and outgoing personality. She lived her 78 years, celebrating life to the fullest. Her husband of 56 years, Larry Cumbo, her children and grandchildren were at the very center of her world. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, playing cards with friends, and especially, celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family.
Helen was a woman of faith, having been active in several Catholic parishes, she and her husband attended Most Blessed Sacrament Church near their home. Helen's belief sustained her during the challenges she faced in her battle against cancer and other illness. Her faith also comforts her loved ones as they know she is resting peacefully with God, Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Helen will be remembered by family and friends for her kind heart, her spirited and charming personality, her endearing beauty, and her loyal character. She never met a stranger, anyone who needed her, she would provide for them, often anonymously. All who knew her were touched by her love, positivity and strength.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, July 27 beginning at 10 am at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, followed by mass at 11:30 am. A Celebration of Helen's Life will be held at a private residence after the service. Helen's wish was to be cremated and for loved ones to celebrate her life with smiles, laughter and love.
In lieu of flowers, and with much appreciation, Helen requested donations be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
