Hazen Stevens Finnerty, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016, at the age of 73 at Oschner Medical Center - Baton Rouge, surrounded by his loving family. Hazen was born on November 22, 1942, in St. Gabriel, Louisiana.
Hazen was a Navy Veteran on the USS Princeton. For 17 years, he was a fire chief, volunteer fireman, and EMT-Intermediate for the St. George Fire Department. Hazen retired from BASF after 33 years, worked at Novatech for 11 years, and then returned to BASF as a contract Instrument Engineer. Hazen was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his camp at Grand Isle and fishing in his "honeyhole". He also enjoyed hunting, shrimping and spending time with family and friends.
Hazen is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 50 years, Deborah Matherne Finnerty, he was a wonderful father to his sons Steve and Eric Finnerty of Baton Rouge; Jeremy and wife, Jennifer Adams Finnerty of Geismar; and his pride and joy grandchildren, Sofie, Jaxon, and Evan. He is also survived by siblings, Evelyn Chamblee and husband, Bryon of Sulphur; Herbert Finnerty of Prairieville; Loretta Finnerty Vaughn and husband Victor of Baton Rouge; and Marlene Finnerty Hanks of Jennings, and Kathleen Finnerty Nelson of Texas.
Hazen was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ethel "Bea" Duhon Finnerty.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
Visitation will continue on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home, from 9:00 am until religious services at 11:00 am, conducted by Deacon J. Louis McGinnis.
Pallbearers are Lance, Travis, Cody, and Shane Reulet; Justin and Brett Bezard; Corey and Kevin Vaughn; Scott and Darryl Finnerty; and Kent and Terry Chamblee.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Hazen was and will always be loved and respected by his family, nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers. He will definitely be missed and the world has been a better place to have had him in it.
