Harriet Evelyn Cain Alford was born on December 12, 1938 in Trout, Louisiana and passed away on December 10, 2020 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She grew up in Ponchatoula and Bogalusa before moving to Baton Rouge in 1953. She was Valedictorian of the Istrouma Sr. High School Class of 1956. She earned her Bachelor’s of Education at Southeastern Louisiana University before beginning her teaching career at Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. She then moved to Baton Rouge and began teaching at her alma mater, Istrouma Sr. High School from 1960 to 1974. She then took a sabbatical to earn her Master’s Degree at LSU. She then went on to teach English at Belaire High School from 1975-1985. In 1985, she was promoted to the EBR Parish School Board as Supervisor of English and Foreign Studies. She headed up the LSU Writing Project from 1984 to 2001. She was a finalist for Teacher of the Year in 1981-82 and received numerous other awards of recognition. In her personal time she enjoyed heading up church youth groups at Istrouma, Jefferson and St. Luke’s United Methodist Churches. She loved her Pomeranian, Charlie, loved to sew and crochet and watch LSU and Saints football games. Preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Thomas H. Alford, Jr., her parents Rev. Albert Jerome Cain and Elsie Sensintaffar Cain. She is survived by her sons, Doug Alford of Baton Rouge, and Greg Alford and wife, Chandra Alford, and their three children, Tyler, Peyton and Taylor, all of Knoxville, Tennessee, and her sister, Rev. Barbara Marie Einsel of Prairieville and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Deumite, Dr. Kenneth Blue, Dr. David West, the staff of Sunrise at Siegen and especially Peaches for the excellent care they provided. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Methodist Children’s Home in Ruston, Louisiana.
