Harlon Dwain Traylor, Sr., a native of Union Parish Louisiana and a resident of Baton Rouge died on December 19, 2011 at 1:52 p.m.. He was a member of the South Baton Rouge Church of Christ. Visitation at Resthaven Garden of Memories, 11817 Jefferson Highway from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, December 22, 2011 and will resume on Friday, December 23, 2011 from 9 a.m. until funeral services which begin at 11 a.m. with Eddie White officiating and graveside service immediately to follow. Pallbearers will be Caleb Traylor, Dave Dixon, Nicholas Dixon, Jeff Ortego, Ben Yan and John Fu: honorary pallbearers are Darvin Albritton, Michael Caldwell, Jack Jones, James Hudson, Dudley Fricke, Wayne Gauthier, Al Schupp, Ed Foreman, Jimmy Carter, and Pat Beatty. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the LSU Agricultural Economics Scholarship Fund, LSU Agricultural Center, Baton Rouge, La. 70803, the South Baton Rouge Chinese Ministry, 8725 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, La. 70809 or to other organizations of choice. Born November 18, 1929 in Conway community near Marion, La., he attended Tugwell City and Farmerville public schools, and earned BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY respectively. Dr. Traylor was a Korean War veteran. A retired Louisiana State university Professor of Agricultural Economics, he initiated and taught futures markets and commodity contract trading, grain marketing, and other agricultural business management courses at LSU. He served at various levels on dozens of graduate student and other university committees. One of his favorite duties was in exploring employment opportunities with individual students. He also served as project leader for many food and feed marketing research and special projects for the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. These efforts were focused on establishing and evaluating existing and proposed federal, state and private agricultural programs affecting the marketing of these commodities. He also helped to implement several international projects undertaken by the LSU Agricultural Center including a 198081 residential assignment designed to provide training and other strategies aimed at preventing extreme instability of rice prices in Sri Lanka. Dr. Traylor was a dedicated researcher, writer, reviewer and editor for the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station and other professional and popular publications. He served as advisor to several public boards and commissions, for example as a public member of the New Orleans Commodities Exchange. He held membership in and served in many professional and service organizations and in Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Gamma Sigma Delta honorary societies. Preceded in death by a son Jonathan Dale Traylor, father Joe Bertis Traylor, mother Claudia Arve Tugwell Traylor Sharp, sister Lona Gay Traylor Albritton and brothers Billy Joe Traylor, and Robert Claude Sharp. Survived by his loving and loved spouse of 56 years Doris Townsend Traylor, children: Harlon Dwain Traylor, Jr. and wife Manel, Wendell Douglas Traylor and wife Sandra, and Deborah Traylor Dixon, M.D. and husband Stephen, grandchildren: Jenna Traylor Ortego and husband Jeff, Caleb Traylor, Alexis Traylor, Dave Marley Dixon, Nicholas Dixon, and Hannah Traylor and great grandchildren Karleigh and Clark Ortego.Survived by siblings Joyce Sharp Canterberry, Sandra Sharp Holloway, Bonnie Sharp Harvey, Vernon Jay Sharp and Delores Sharp Vines and by numerous other relatives, many of whom are natives and or residents of Union and Ouachita Parishes.
