Gwendolyn Miller

December 2, 1917 — March 13, 2008

Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Proverbs 31:29 NIV. Gwendolyn Gwen Magee Miller went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 13, 2008. Born Dec. 2, 1917, in Bogalusa, Gwen lived in Baton Rouge most of her adult life. She learned the value of a good education when she was very young and graduated as salutatorian a year early from Bogalusa High School. She graduated with honors from Louisiana College in Pineville with a B.A. degree in chemistry. She earned a master's of education degree from LSU in Baton Rouge with a major in education and a minor in psychology. She continued her education by earning a master's plus 30 credit hours from LSU. She also took courses from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Widowed at an early age, she worked hard her whole life to make a wonderful and loving home for her children. At times, she held more than one job. She began her career as an elementary schoolteacher in the Bogalusa public schools. She then worked as a chemist for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Florence, Ala., and later as a chemist for the Standard Oil Co. in Baton Rouge. After her children were born, she returned to teaching so she could spend more time with her family. During her career, she taught fifth grade at Belfair Elementary, Broadmoor Elementary and Baton Rouge Preparatory School in Baton Rouge. She also taught at Sevierville Middle School in Sevierville, Tenn. Her many part-time positions included sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia, adult education teacher at Valley Park and Rosenwald schools in Baton Rouge, library aide at the East Baton Rouge Parish Downtown and Goodwood branch libraries, and summer kindergarten teacher at Glen Oaks Park, Eden Park, Brookstown, Park and Fairfields elementary schools. After her retirement, she volunteered at Jefferson Terrace, Mayfair and Villa del Rey elementary schools. She was a member of University Baptist Church and a former member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and the Baton Rouge Music Club. She enjoyed all aspects of nature, especially animals. She excelled in art and music and played the piano, the accordion and the dulcimer. One of her greatest accomplishments was her 40 years of teaching. She firmly believed that time spent teaching is never lost. Her passionate commitment to teaching and her students was remarkable. She would want to personally thank all of the young people who shared their lives with her. She will truly be missed. She is survived by a daughter, Melanie Miller Eiche and her husband, Richard; a son, Michael Eldridge Miller and his wife, Anne; two brothers, Dr. Lyman A. Magee, of Oxford, Miss., and Len B. Magee, of Bogalusa; two grandchildren, Gwen Miller Poling and her husband, Jason, and Ramsey C. Miller and his wife, Andrea; a stepgrandchild, Elizabeth Eiche Paul and her husband, Greg; three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Elvin Miller; a daughter, Melinda Merle Miller; her parents, Dr. Donies Eldridge Magee and Novie Pierce Magee; her sisters, Augusta Magee Wood and Wanzie Magee Kirkpatrick; a stepgranddaughter, Susan Eiche Green; and her two precious, beloved little dogs, Rosie and Cricket.
