GW “Mack” McClendon, Jr., lovingly known as “Poppy”, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2022 at the age of 72 after a long battle with bronchiectasis. He was born on September 24, 1949 to Billie Ruth McClendon and GW McClendon, Sr., and was raised in Tickfaw. After attending Southeastern University, he spent two years in the United States Air Force before moving to Baton Rouge.
Mack was a devoted family man who was always willing to help those around him. He enjoyed boating and fishing, especially fishing trips with his daughter, but his greatest joys were his two granddaughters. Mack loved sharing stories or showing pictures of his girls. He would always smile and have a sparkle in his eye when talking about how proud he was of his daughter and his beautiful grandbabies. He loved his family with all his heart.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Sanchez McClendon; his daughter Katie McClendon Palm and her husband Danny; and his two grandchildren, Rebecca and Anna. He is also survived by his sisters, Penny Dreher and Ruth Bergeron and husband Larry; and special friends John Walker, Donnie Cook, Dan Bieber, and Kevin Romeo. He’s also survived by numerous friends, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father GW (Mac) McClendon, Sr.; mother, Billie McClendon Yersavich; brother Harry Bernard, Jr.; sister, Patsy Butler; brothers-in-law Donnie Dreher and Ronnie Sanchez.
