Gregory Todd Hammerschmidt, son of James and Clara Hammerschmidt, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 40, born in Hays, Kan., on Jan. 4, 1968. He also lived in Valley Centre, Kan. He lived in Saudi Arabia for four years and then in Baton Rouge. He attended Baton Rouge Magnet High School, graduating in 1986. He enlisted in the Air National Guard upon graduation. He leaves behind his wife, Marlene Spears Hammerschmidt; two children, Geoffrey and Katie Hammerschmidt; brother-in-law, Bill Gussman and his wife, Jodi, and their children, William, Amanda, Stovall and Macy Claire; brother-in-law, Bo Spears and his wife, Toni, and their children, David and Chris Spears; brother-in-law, Myron Smith and his wife, Carla McMorris, and their children, Jennifer Kerry and her husband, Steven, Brandi Hawkins and her husband, Chris, and their son, Joseph; sister-in-law, Jamie McMorris; mother-in-law, Louise Spears; and many wonderful and thoughtful aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Paul and Frances Harmon, who were of Oberlin, Kan.; paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Rose Hammerschmidt, who were of Hays; brother-in-law, Billy Wayne Spears; father-in-law, Carlos Spears; and three special angels in heaven, his sister, Stephanie Hammerschmidt Gussman, and cousins, Susan Deges, who was of Grainfield, Kan., and Sara Davis, who was of Nacodogches, Texas. Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 29, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Jerry Martin. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the James Hammerschmidt memorial fund at Chase Bank in honor of Gregory Hammerschmidt.
