Glynn Burchfield Gregg departed this life on Monday, October 7, 2013. She was born April 7, 1925 in Drew, Mississippi to Rufus Lafayette and Oma Octavia Burks Burchfield. She was the youngest of seven children. After graduation from high school, she was briefly employed as a genuine Rosie the Riveter at the airport in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She and her childhood friend then embarked on the grand adventure of moving to Memphis, Tennessee. In Memphis, she met and fell in love with a handsome young pilot, 1st Lieutenant Richard Thurmond Gregg of the United States Army Air Corp. They married in 1945 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, then traveled by troop train to Miami, Florida for their honeymoon. They spent the next 59 years together. Opportunity to explore our nation came with the pursuit of education and employment taking them to Ann Arbor, Michigan Yellowstone National Park Shenandoah National Park Columbia, Missouri Baton Rouge, Louisiana Rockville, Maryland and once again to Baton Rouge, home for the remainder of their lives. In their early years in Baton Rouge, Glynn was a student at Arthur Murray Studio. There her talents as a dancer quickly emerged and she was recruited to become an instructor. She appeared on their weekly, local broadcast. The couples love of dance led to the opening of the DeVille Dance Studio. Her enthusiasm and love for dancing brought her pleasure throughout her life. Glynn dedicated most of her time to being a loving wife and mother to her children. She leaves to cherish her memory children, Cheryl Ann Gregg Schirmer, wife of Roy Edmund Schirmer Jr. of Fort Smith Arkansas Richard Thurmond Gregg Jr. and wife Judy Elaine Caples Gregg of Baton Rouge and Sara Joyce Gregg Fontenot and husband Donald Simon Fontenot of Pineville, Lousiana. In 1980 she became Gigi and is survived by 8 grandchildren: Richard Edmund Schirmer of Fort Smith Arkansas Sarah Caitlin Schirmer Phelan and husband William Adam Phelan of Baltimore, Maryland Kristy Ann Gregg Gremillion and husband Morgan Lafitte Gremillion of Lafayette, Louisiana Sherry Glynn Gregg and fianc Derek Michael Hernandez of Lafayette, Louisiana Richard Rich Thurmond Gregg III of Baton Rouge Lauren Elise Fontenot Beck and husband Robert Dean Beck of Pineville, Louisiana Jenniffer Simone Istre Moore and husband Joseph William Moore of Addis, Louisiana Matthew Simon Fontenot and wife Andria Sarah Lofton Fontenot of Pineville, Louisiana. She is survived by 2 great granddaughters, Ella Kristyn Fontenot and Addyson Drew Fontenot, both of Pineville, Louisiana, and devoted nephew John Charles Simpson of Aspen, Colorado. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Dick Thurmond Gregg granddaughter, Kristyn Leigh Fontenot siblings, Levada Burchfield, Albert P. Burchfield, Ruby Simpson, Eunice Huey, Ladelle Burchfield, and Marvin Burchfield. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 12 noon until funeral service at 2 PM. Interment will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory in the Honor Estates garden alongside her husband. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsonsinlaw. Honorary pallbearers are John Charles Simpson, Sr. Gregg Selser Kennerly Philip Lawrence Fritz Thomas Houston White Robert Bolton and Byron Brown. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Amedisys Home Health and Baton Rouge General Hospital ICU for their loving care of Miss Gigi in her final days.
