Gladys Bowles

February 15, 1923 — January 24, 2013

A native of Robstown, Texas and longtime resident of Baton Rouge, she entered heavens gate on Thursday, January 24, 2013. She was 89. Jean was a faithful servant of the Lord and taught generations about Jesus Christ. She was loved dearly by her children, Billie Jean Bowles, Bill Bowles III, and Vera Bowles Harrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Bowles Jr, and grandson, David Stiglets. She retired as a campus housing director for LSU in 1992 and devoted the next 20 years to her family and church, Jefferson Baptist. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, and gardener, but was known best as Nan to grandchildren, Jana Braud and husband Arthur, Robin Strickland and husband Mark, Tracie Wharton and husband Tre, Dean Bowles and wife Staci, and Dawn Lawson. She was a role model for great granddaughters, Rebecca Wharton, Rachel Dickens, Sarah Lawson, Misti Gauthier, Seneca Alexis Bowles, McKinley Ashlyn Miller, and great grandsons, serving as pall bearers, Dustin Bodin, Travis Bodin, Derek Braud, David Braud, Daniel Dickens, Eric Wharton, Mason Dean honorary and David Bremer honorary. She enjoyed tremendously the visits of her great great grandchildren, Hunter Bodin, and Taylor Lindsay. She was an active member of her church, serving as a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and Young at Heart, as a leader of childrens Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and as a greeter at church services and for the Twin Living Christmas Trees. She made costumes for numerous events for those in her church and for her many family members. And she was famous for her peanut butter cookies that she taught generations to make. A celebration of her life and ministry will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Jefferson Highway on January 26, 2013, from 12 noon until funeral service at 2pm. Service will be conducted by Brother Tommy French. Interment at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for the care from Hospice In His Care, the staff at St. Josephs Carpenter House, and especially Helen Daniel and Camille Burkhalter. The family asks that gifts to honor her life be sent to Jefferson Baptist Church at 9135 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
