George Thomas

July 6, 1935 — March 21, 2017

George C. Thomas, a native of Baton Rouge and a resident of New Roads, La. passed away peacefully at home on March 21st at the age of 81 surrounded by his family.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8.

He was born in Tylertown, MS on July 6 ,1935 to George and Thelma (Stringer) Thomas. At the early age of 18, he joined the Air Force to serve his country. He spent many years in industrial plants as an insulator, retiring from Asbestos Workers Local 53 as a Superintendent in 1997.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Martha Patterson Thomas, daughter and son-in-law, Will and Kimberly Porche, daughter and son-in-law, Rick and Cathy Leggette, daughter and son-in-law Sheree' and Ritchie Lynch; 9 grandchildren - Laura and Alaina Leggette, Savannah (Thomas) Carlock and husband Clayton, Logan, Sebastian, Devin, Evan, Stevyn and Mykayla Lynch, brother and sister-in-law Joe and Linda Thomas, sister-in-law, Patricia Patterson, sister-in-law, Bernadette Lawrence , numerous aunts, nieces and nephews, and his special canine companion "Baby Girl"and feline companions, "Sweet P" and "Sweetheart".

He was preceded in death by his son, Bret Thomas, grandsons, Shane Brewer and Jordyn Lynch, parents, George and Thelma Thomas, and brother, John Ray Thomas.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather. He loved gardening, fishing and LSU football.

Almost 3 years ago, he moved to New Roads to be near one of his daughters and loved the small town atmosphere. He was known for his sense of humor and jokes and his love for animals. He will be remembered and loved by all who knew him.

Special thanks to Dr. Ronald Delrie and Dr. Maurice King for their support and care over the last few years. Special thanks also to the nursing staff of Ochsner Medical Center, Pointe Coupee Home Health, Pointe Coupee Hospice and the Pointe Coupee Volunteer Fire Department for their loving and attentive care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of George can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center or Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.

Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, on Saturday, March 25, 2017, from 9:00 am until funeral services at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
