George Henry Southwick, age 85, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at home in Baton Rouge. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. He was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Baton Rouge, the son of the late Willie Allain and Josephine Jolissaint Southwick. He was the youngest of five siblings. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anna Claire Annison Southwick daughter and soninlaw, Susan and Steve Hendry, of Covington daughter, Georganna Brogdon daughter and soninlaw, Jeannine and Jim Barr, of Houston and grandchildren, Timothy Hendry, Stephanie Hendry, Matthew Brogdon, Annalane Brogdon and Wes Brogdon. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Thelma Southwick Braud, William Southwick, Genevieve Southwick Edgar and Catherine Southwick Hebert. George was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, a graduate of Catholic High School and attended Southeastern Louisiana University and LSU. He was coowner of SW Electric and a member of Electrical Union 995 for 60 years. In addition, George was also a member of the American Legion and St. George Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, where he honorably and courageously spent 18 months on Okinawa, Japan, in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Upon his return home, he met Anna Claire Annison and they later married in 1949. George will be remembered not only for his dedication and loyalty to his family, but also for his incredible love of aviation. He found joy in music, gardening and displayed excellence of craftsmanship in both airplane and boat building. Visiting will be Monday, Oct. 31, at St. George Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m., the Rev. Brent Maher, celebrant. Entombment in the church mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Claude Watkins, Steve Hendry, Jim Barr, Timothy Hendry, Matthew Brogdon and Wes Brogdon. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Baton Rouge for their heartfelt help and support, especially Nettie Guedon, R.N., and Dr. Gerald Barber. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to Hospice of Baton Rouge, Catholic High School or St. George Catholic School. Resthaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
