Gary Thomas Durham, age 71, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of October 9, 2017.
Gary was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on June 18, 1946. He is a graduate of St. John's Academy, in Plattsburgh, NY, Monroe Community College, Rochester, NY, State University of New York, Oswego, NY, the FBI National Academy 128th Session, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, and numerous law enforcement training programs. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Louisiana University Police Association, and American Society for Industrial Security.
Gary faithfully served the LSU community for 32 years, from 1977 to 2009, as LSU Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety and Risk Management. His public service also included 16 years to the St. George Fire Protection District and over ten years to the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission.
Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen Russell Durham, his daughters Caralyn B. Durham of Baton Rouge, LA, Nichole D. Gregory and her spouse Shawn Gregory of Highland Village, TX, and Katy D. Arnold and her spouse William Arnold of Mt. Juliet, TN, his grandchildren Brandon Moree, Taylor Moree, Dustin Moree, Khoen Gregory, Merric Gregory, and Kaelen Arnold, his sisters Cheryl Bayer and her spouse Dr. Robert Bayer of McComb, MS, Joan Murphy and her spouse James Murphy of Norcross, GA, and Col. (ret.) Monica B. Gorbandt-Smith, MD and her spouse Chris Smith of Madison, AL, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His is preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Joseph Durham, Elizabeth Light Balkus, and stepfather, Joseph John Balkus, Jr.
Visiting hours will take place at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, LA, on Wednesday, October 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at St. Jude Catholic Church on Thursday, October 12 from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
