Dr. Gary Dean Black passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born August 29, 1939, in Independence, Iowa to Leonard Black and Evelyn Stohr Black. He graduated high school in Waterloo, Iowa.
Gary entered the United States Navy in June of 1959, and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in January of 1963. After the military, he went back to school and received his degree from Palmer Chiropractic College. The dedication to his profession culminated with 50 years of serving the Baton Rouge community at his office, Acadian Chiropractic. Gary’s professionalism, drive, and consistent focus on bringing comfort and healing to his many patients remained his primary objective throughout his career. He was a mentor to countless students and practitioners of chiropractic medicine.
He was a devout member of the Baha’i faith and served in Baha’i community in Baton Rouge for many years. Gary was an avid car buff, collecting and restoring antique cars. He thoroughly enjoyed the time spent and the camaraderie with his fellow car enthusiasts. He was a member of several car clubs, including the Nomad Club and the Corvair Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and beloved ‘Grandma Black’; his devoted wife of 60 years Astrid Roff Black; their daughter Debra Black; and brothers-in-law, Nater Roff and Roger Roff.
Gary is survived by his sister Novalene Black Melchert and her husband Norman; his daughter Laurie Black Gaspard and husband Timothy; his grandchildren Christine Gaspard Campbell and husband Kevin, John Dean Gaspard, Daniel Ashraf Gaspard and wife Anisah, Joshua Gaspard and wife Abbey, and Kaeleigh Black-Butler; his great-grandchildren Anisa, Grayson, Olivia and Zoe Campbell and Clementine Gaspard; as well as numerous other loving family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Services on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. A Visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
