Fred Herman Shiel Jr. passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011. Shiel was a retired pharmacist, having served as chief inspector of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy and in the Office of Diversion Control of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in Arlington, Va. He owned a Lafayette drugstore, Shiels Drug Center and served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves as a pharmacist at Fort Sam Houston. Born in Jena on July 23, 1933, Shiel graduated from Jena High School and from Loyola University New Orleans College of Pharmacy. Shiel was preceded in death by his father, Fred Herman Shiel and mother, Irene Reynaud Shiel. Survived by his wife, Joyce Stanberry Shiel exwife, Gwendolyn T. Shiel sons, David, James and Michael daughters, Sharon Hudson and Julie Davies stepdaughter, Melanie Bookout 17 grandchildren three greatgrandchildren and sister, Irene Allbritton. A memorial service will be held at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. Donations to The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice may be made in lieu of flowers.
