Flora Gilmer Crabtree passed away in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 90 on Thursday, September 26, 2024. She succumbed after a year-long illness. Flora was born on March 17, 1934, in Anniston, Alabama, where she grew up with her brother and two half-siblings. She was a resident of Alabama in her early years, and she spent the last 70 years in Baton Rouge.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Houston Crabtree; parents, Jesse Louise Hicks and step-father, Noah Hicks; an infant daughter, Karen Ann Crabtree; a brother, Charles Edwin Gilmer, and a half-brother, Phillip Wayne Hicks.
Flora is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debra Gayle Crabtree and Layne Stephen Cannon; a grandson, Thomas Edward Cannon and his wife Brandi Patricia Reeves; a half-sister, Linda Hicks Griggs; and several nieces and nephews.
Flora was a member of Florida Boulevard Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for a while, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Istrouma Chapter 162. She was a life-long homemaker, a painter, and a retired greeting card distributor. She was a caring and generous lady, beloved by many, who will miss her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 5pm until 8pm. The visitation will continue on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, beginning at 10am until the funeral service at 11am. Burial will immediately follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
