Eunice Mathis Russell, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 in Jena, Louisiana.
Eunice was born August 5, 1919, to Simmie and Nellie Mathis in Baker County, Georgia.
A retired restaurant owner and school bus driver, Eunice loved preparing meals and visiting with friends and family. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and sewing. After graduating from high school, Eunice worked in the food service industry and joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1943. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Greenwell Springs.
Eunice married Adam Lee Russell on October 26, 1942. He preceded her in death on September 10, 2003 after 61 years of marriage. She is survived by her son, Rodney Lee Russell married to Gail Gernand Russell; daughter, Paula Russell Morgan married to Charles Dallas Morgan; three grandchildren, Leslie Russell Serna married to Ricardo Javier Serna, Kelly Elizabeth Simonton, and Daniel Lee Russell married to Nikki Evans Russell; two great-grandchildren, Noah Javier Serna and Jonah Miguel Serna.
Eunice was preceded in death by parents, Simmie and Nellie Mathis; sisters, Roma Mathis Edmonds, Margie Nell Starling, and Susie Lee Price; and brothers, James Andrew Mathis, Kerby Smith Mathis, and Woodrow Wilson Mathis.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, from 10:00 am until services at 12:00 pm.
Pallbearers: Donnie Courtney, Paul Crumholt, Joe Davis, Daniel Russell, Gary Russell, and Ricardo Serna.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, 7200 Desiard Street, Monroe, LA 71203, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
