A man of strong beliefs who stood up for those who worked for him and everyone he knew, Ernie Rhodes officially accepted his new position as chief of police helping St. Peter guard the gates of heaven effective Saturday evening, Feb. 11, 2012. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1950 to Ernest Adam Rhodes and Ernestine Frubougher Rhodes, Ernie grew up in Houma. After graduating from Terrebonne High School, he attended USL and LSU. A truly dedicated law enforcement officer, Ernie joined the Houma Police Department in 1973 and the Baton Rouge Police Department in 1977, rising to the rank of captain before retiring from that department in 2006. He then accepted his dream job as chief of police in the Hawley, Minn., Police Department, retiring from that position in 2010 to come back home to friends and family in Louisiana with the wife he loved so deeply, Alice Andries Consenza. Ernie enjoyed golf, riding his Harley, and traveling, having traveled through most of North America and Europe several times in his fierce determination to live life to the fullest and complete his bucket list before accepting his newest assignment. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice, and daughter, Jessica. His survivors also include his stepchildren, Angela Cosenza, Rob Cosenza, and John Cosenza, his wife, Robin and their two children, Michael and Lela. Ernie also leaves behind his sisters, Patricia Rhodes and Paulette Suzon Chauvin Johnson as well as a very large number of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Monday, Feb. 13, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Darrow, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Michael Galea.
