Elsie Merritt

April 26, 1923 — March 12, 2008

A retired shipyard riveter during World War II, she died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was 84. Visiting at Resthaven Funeral Home on Friday, March 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting resumes Saturday from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. She is survived by a son, Roger Merritt and wife Louise; sister, Helen Bridges; two grandchildren, Matthew and Timothy Merritt; numerous nieces and nephews; and two lifetime friends, Ellen Mac and Eunice. She was preceded in death by her father, Norvil Varnado; mother, Lillian Tidwell; seven brothers, infant sister, and a son, Ronald Merritt. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was one of the last of the Rosie the Riveters.
