Elizabeth "Liz" Carmody Gonzalez, 81, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on November 25, joining her beloved husband, Chico, after 22 years of separation. She was born in Natchitoches, and grew up in New Orleans, where she attended St. Joseph's Academy. After moving to Baton Rouge, she reared six children, balancing motherhood with the challenges of being a coach's wife. She was a friend and mentor to other coaches' wives and made many lifelong friends along the way. Once her children were older, she began a career in banking. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Liz loved fishing, coffee, and conversation. She spent many happy days with a "happy heart" at her camp on Belle River, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She was known for "telling it like it is," but always with love and a sense of humor.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Vince and Patti Gonzalez, Mary Stewart, Michael Gonzalez, Julie and Warren Burns, Jan and Gary Pennington, and Christie and Carol Richard; her brother Jim Carmody and his wife, Noonie; her grandchildren and their spouses, Alicia and Dev Engle, Melinda Gonzalez, Sarah and Kevan Cullins Jr., Nicholas Stewart, Lauren Stewart. Joshua Gonzalez, Blaine Burns, Drewe Burns, Elizabeth Pennington, Jordyn Richard and Chandler Richard; her great-grandchildren Vincent and Everett Engle and Maiyah Nguyen; her nephews Steve, Brian, Keith and Chris Carmody and their families; and her best friend and fishing partner, Sylvia Zimmerle.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Catino Gonzalez, and her parents, Bema and James Edward Carmody.
Visitation will be at Resthaven Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Thursday from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., with burial at Resthaven. At her request, pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Joseph Deumite and the staff at Our Lady of the Lake.
