Dr. Joseph Philip Roumain (“Doc”), 98, was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on August 18, 1924, and passed away peacefully on October 19, 2022.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Natalie Simmons Roumain; daughter, Donna Roumain Versaggi; grandchildren, Lauren Versaggi and Jordan Versaggi; and daughter-in-law, Toni Maranto Roumain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Bovard Roumain and Joseph Philip Roumain; son, Philip Douglas Roumain; and sister, Miriam “Sis” Roumain Carey.
Dr. Roumain attended Catholic High School (Class of 1941), Louisiana State University, and Illinois College of Optometry (1949). He volunteered for the military and served in the Army Air Corps in WWII, where he flew missions to Okinawa.
Dr. Roumain had a love for all LSU sports, gardening, and philanthropic work. He was an active member and past president of the Lakeshore Lions Club with perfect attendance for 60 years and was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Roumain’s most fulfilling volunteer work was with his church, First Baptist, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
Honorary pallbearers are Ricky Ferrara, Larkin Harris, James Davis, Forrest Scott, Dudley May, Johnny Powell, Richard Wright, and Victor Versaggi.
The family would like to express the utmost gratitude to everyone who helped “Doc” over the years, but most importantly, to the loving caregivers who went above and beyond daily to make his final years so very special.
A time of remembrance and visitation will be held in the Mausoleum at Resthaven Gardens on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 9:30AM with a service being held at 10AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
