Frederick Marcus McMullan, DVM, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on October 7, 2019. He graduated from Lee High School and attended Louisiana Tech University and graduated from Louisiana State University earning a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
Fred lovingly served many pets and their owners of the Greater Baton Rouge area as their veterinarian at All Pets Hospital which he co-owned with Elisabeth Schmidt Austin, his childhood neighbor and fellow veterinarian.
Dr. McMullan’s significant contributions to veterinary medicine and public service were recognized by the Louisiana Medical Veterinary Association, naming him the Ralph C. Cooper Veterinarian of the Year in 2017. He worked extensively with many local rescue organizations, and was known for putting in countless hours of his time to provide the best care and attention to the animals in need, and was an inspiration and a friend to the many students who learned under his wing. His legacy in veterinary medicine will live on in the countless lives that he touched through his generous gifts, talents, and devotion.
Always enthusiastic, Fred had many interests in his youth, including the Scouts, excelling as an Eagle Scout. He loved all genres of music, LSU sports, photography, and travel. A special trip to Washington State was enjoyed with some of his closest friends in the summer 2019. Over the past several years, Fred enjoyed racing Porsche sport cars with his friend, Ben Cherbonnier, even traveling to Atlanta, Florida, and Texas to compete. Both were nationally certified driving educators and instructors. Always on the move, he was an avid runner and former member of Club South Runners, even going to Boston to finish in the Centennial Boston Marathon. Fred enjoyed Mardi Gras and was a member of the Southdowns Krewe of Kritters, actively participating with friends Cathy and Mike Raborn.
Fred is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Debbi Mitchell McMullan; brother, Ted N. McMullan, Jr.; sister-in-law, Sandy Mitchell Walsh; nephews, Nathan Walsh and Matthew Mitchell; many nieces and nephews; and, four whippet dogs: Mimi, Pootie, Teche, and Louie. He is preceded in death by his father, Theodore N. McMullan, Sr. and his mother, Hortense Shearer McMullan, and sister, Janice McMullan Higgenbottom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local animal rescue groups. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Hospice of Baton Rouge and to Drs. Guidroz and Hanson.
