Dr. Robert Norton Sanders, a loving father and grandfather, passed away on October 8, 2016 at the age of 81. He battled Parkinson's disease for the last 15 years and fought valiantly to the very end.
He grew up on the family farm in Medora, Illinois and after receiving bachelor's degrees from Shurtleff College in Alton, Illinois and master degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, moved to Baton Rouge in the early 60's to attend L.S.U. and received his doctorate in chemistry. He retired from Albemarle Corporation after 30 years as a research chemist. He earned 40 U.S. patents during his time there. He was an avid photographer and model railroader. He was very active for many years in the Baton Rouge Soccer Association as a coach, a referee and later as a National FIFA referee assessor. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren attending school sporting events, science fairs, Boy Scout campouts, fishing and traveling the country to see and ride trains. He has been a member of University United Methodist Church since moving to Baton Rouge in 1963, often teaching both youth and adult Sunday school.
His parents, Norton and Vera Sanders, and his beloved brother, Kenneth Sanders, precede him in death.
His loving wife of 59 years, Alta Van Deusen Sanders, his daughter, Patricia Sanders Giesler and son-in-law Grant Giesler, and his son, Thomas Sanders and daughter-in-law Susan Sanders survive him. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Christopher (his fishing and train buddy), Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Savannah, Sophie Grace and Ethan and his nieces, Janice McAfee and Marsha Chamberlain.
