Dr. Louis J. Capozzoli, a civil engineer in Baton Rouge, died Monday, May 16, 2011. He was 82 years old. A native of New York City, he earned a B.S. from New York University, a Masters Degree from Harvard University, and a Doctorate from MIT. He served in the army during the Korean War, returning to New York where he obtained his pilots license. In 1956, his profession brought him to Baton Rouge where he met and married his wife of 52 years, Laura. In 1965 they founded Louis J. Capozzoli and Associates, Inc., a leading geotechnical engineering firm. The company specialized in consulting work on soils and foundation jobs in the United States and in many foreign countries. During his career he earned the Professional Engineering License in several states, belonged to the Louisiana Engineering Society, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Society for Professional Engineers. He remained active in his professional and civic organizations throughout his life. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge for 42 years, serving as a district governor of District 6200. He and his wife established the Dr. and Mrs. Louis J. Capozzoli Rotary Scholarships, the Louis J. Capozzoli Scholarships awarded by the Louisiana Engineering Society Baton Rouge Chapter, the Capozzoli Library at the Catholic Student Center at LSU, and a Leadership Training Institute through his fraternity, Zeta Psi. Education was a priority, but he loved Rotary, boating, and flying. He was awarded the Wright Brothers FAAcertified master pilot award and served as rear commander, receiving his 50th Merit Mark from the US Power Squadron. He was an active member of the Baton Rouge American Italian Association and a member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church Mens Club. Visitation at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on May 19, 2011 from 10:00 am until a mass of Christian Funeral at 11:30 am, conducted by the Rev. Michael Connors. He is survived by his wife, Laura Broussard two sisters, Christine Raso and Gloria Barbieri and numerous nieces and nephews.
