Dr. Madhurendu Bhushan Kumar, age 75, a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on February 2, 2017.
He graduated from Indian School of Mines and was awarded the Hayden Medal for breaking the school record for the highest achievement which no one has broken since. Afterwards he worked in the Oil India Limited before coming to the United States for his Ph. D. from Louisiana State University in Geology and Petroleum Engineering.
Dr. Kumar was the Director of Geological Oil and Gas Division at Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation for 14 years. He was a Researcher at LSU as well as a Professor at Hunter College in New York. Dr. Kumar also served as a Priest to the Hindu Samaj Temple and the Hindu Vedic Society Temple and supported the Indian Community with numerous Hindu Services. He was a great scholar of the Sanskrit language and vedic studies.
He is survived by his wife of 51 ½ years, Sharda Kumar; his daughter, Vinita Gandhi and her fiancé, Andrew Fordham; his son, Madhuresh Kumar and wife, Kristen M. Kumar; his grandchildren, Rohan, Mallika, and Kamryn; his sisters, Nibha and Prabha; and his brothers, Purnendu and Vimalendu Kumar.
Dr. Kumar is preceded in death by his parents, Sitaram Prabhas and Bhawani Devi; a brother and two sisters.
Visitation will be held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory and Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, LA on Sunday, February 5, 2017 from 10:00am until services at 1:00pm.
